Why Your First Machine-Knit Garment Shouldn’t Be Oversized? - Marina's Design

When I first started machine knitting, I saw one type of project everywhere: boxy, oversized sweaters. They looked cozy, forgiving, and easy — but when I actually made one, I felt like I was wearing a rectangle that made me look larger than I am. It didn’t fit my body, and it definitely didn’t match my style.

That’s when I decided:
I’m going to focus on making real clothes. Clothes that fit, that I can wear to work, out to dinner, or layered under a jacket. And I want to help you do the same.

Why Oversized Isn’t Beginner-Friendly?

Oversized knitting might seem easy, but it can actually make machine knitting harder for beginners:

  • You don’t learn real shaping (so necklines, sleeves, and darts stay a mystery)

  • The fabric bias, curling, or hanging can become unpredictable

  • You’re more likely to give up because the results feel sloppy or unflattering

Oversized garments also don’t teach you how to design. You’re just making wide panels and hoping it looks good.

Why Fitted Garments Are Better (Yes, Even for Beginners)?

What if your first project helped you:

  • Understand how bust darts create shape

  • Practice tension swatching for real results

  • Learn to build patterns that scale to your body

That’s what well fitted knitwear offers.

You’ll learn skills you’ll use forever, and the final result? A wearable garment you’ll actually love.

My Approach to Fitted Machine-Knit Garments

On this blog, and in my upcoming tutorials, I’ll show you how to:

  • Choose the right yarns for fitted garments

  • Draft patterns using both hand measurements and digital tools

  • Knit step-by-step on a standard gauge machine

  • Finish cleanly, professionally, and with fit in mind

No fluff. No “just eyeball it.” Just clear, structured lessons — from start to finish.
